Kromek’s GR1 has been integrated into the EU-RADION Project: a novel technological system with the goal of enhancing the CBRN detection and elimination capabilities of first responders and emergency response teams.
The EU-RADION Project aims to advance countermeasures against terrorist attacks by equipping first responders and emergency response teams with a system that provides comprehensive view of all threats present and the situation at hand. Kromek’s GR1 has been incorporated into the radiological detection unit. It will provide first responders with essential spectral data to improve radiation detection and identification abilities.
The EU-RADION Project arose from eight European Institutions from research, academia and government clubbing together to counteract the rising threat of terrorist attacks in the EU. With a focus on CBRN threat detection and elimination, their main aim was to improve the situational awareness of first responders and emergency response teams.
The Project began in 2019, and the EU-RADION team published their Final Project Report in February of last year.
What they’ve produced is a novel technological system that harnesses the power of advanced machine-learning, modelling algorithms and a unique combination of detectors.
Kromek’s high resolution, CZT-based GR1 gamma spectrometer forms part of the radiological detection unit of the system. The GR1 paired with a Geiger-Muller tube effectively detects, identifies and localises radionuclides. This significantly improves the radiological threat detection capabilities of first responders.
This carefully interwoven network of detectors, sensor applications and software collects and analyses an array of data to give first responders a comprehensive view of the entire situation and specific threats at play. As a result, the appropriate countermeasures can be deployed and the safety and efficiency of emergency responders significantly improved.
