Analysing spent nuclear fuel using the GR1
The GR1 is the world's smallest gamma spectrometer
This client used thirty-six Kromek GR1-As in a 12 by 3 format to create a radiation detector array to analyse the radiation levels and gamma isotopes in spent nuclear fuel. As you would expect this material was highly radioactive and costly to move and store.
The array created a pixelated picture of the spent fuel, which allowed the client to pinpoint areas of high and low activity within the block of material.
This shows the versatility of the GR1, its small size makes it very perfect for incorporating into your own detector design.
Team Kromek were also on hand to advise the client on the best way to build the array and provide the necessary software interfaces.

The size and sensitivity of the GR1-A made it perfect for use in this radiation detector array. The GR1-A is one of the models in the GR1 range which are CZT-based high-performance gamma-ray spectrometers. They are completely self-contained, with built-in preamplifier, shaping amplifier, baseline restorer, pulse height digitizer, and HV supply. The digitized pulse heights of detected gamma-ray signals are sent to a PC via the USB. The unit is powered entirely from the USB bus, so no external power supply is needed.
You can read more examples of how our customers have used the GR1 in User Stories.
