Radiation Mapping Rover

Safely patrol and search an area for Gamma and Neutron radiation with the UGV Radiation Mapping Rover

Complete Unmanned Ground Vehicle Radiation Mapping system

The Kromek UGV Radiation Mapping Rover gives you real-time location measurement and mapping of radioactivity with isotope identification using a small ground vehicle (we call it the RadRover).

This provides a ground-based metre resolution maps of radiation levels. The RadRover allows routine and repeated monitoring of site areas to rapidly provide data to highlight anomalous changes in radiation and its spread related to nuclear incidents or nuclear transport accidents. When deployed for site surveys on unmanned vehicles, because the operator remains at a remote distance, the RadRover effectively reduces worker exposure to radiation. The payload bay contains either one or two Kromek gamma spectrometers and positioning devices utilising custom-built software to combine radiation intensity and geolocation data to produce maps of radiation levels and identification of isotopes present.

Using the RadRover you can rapidly collect radiation data with excellent sensitivity and isotopic fingerprinting.

The RadRover can be pre-programmed for autonomous area surveys.

UGV radiation and mapping rover: what do you get

1. RadRover UGV Radiation Mapping Rover

The small robust four-wheeled RadRover is designed for rough terrain but is light enough to be lifted by one person and can be carried in a car. Typical RadRover all up weight: less than 1.5Kg (3.3lbs)

Its onboard sensors include multi-band GNSS receiver (GPS, GLONASS) – readings include latitude, longitude, altitude, and uncertainties; temperature, pressure and humidity sensor; embedded real-time clock (Internet-connected units synchronise time with NTP servers); 9-DOF IMU (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer).

2. UGV radiation mapping rover detector unit and payload bay

Multiple gamma spectrometers can be connected to the RadRover and work simultaneously. The unit can use:

  • Kromek GR1 10 x 10 x 10 mm CZT based detector. Energy resolution @ 662 keV (21°C operation) <2.5% FWHM. Energy Range 30 keV – 3.0 MeV
  • Kromek SIGMA 50 25.4 x 25.4 x 25.4 mm CsI(Tl) scintillation radiation detector. Energy resolution @ 662 keV (21°C operation) <7.2% FWHM. Energy Range 50 keV – 1.5 MeV

3. Gamma spectroscopy and mapping software

The software shows CPS and location, CPS over time, energy spectrum, dose estimation and isotope characterisation. Giving you a picture of the radiation spread over an area.

4. Training and set-up

We offer set-up and training for the RadRover including operating system maintenance, operational concepts, mission planning and use of the software.
