Preventing Nuclear Smuggling

Dr Christopher Ashley Ford, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation laid out what the US Government is doing to fight nuclear smuggling at a recent Nuclear Security Working Group Workshop on “U.S. Government Coordination to Address Nonproliferation” at Wye River Conference Center, Queenstown, MD, USA.

The US Government takes the threat of smuggled nuclear material very seriously. Given the amount of radioactive material that goes missing every year then the threat of material being used to construct a radiological dispersal device (also known as a dirty bomb) is a real and present danger.

As Dr Ford, states: “We are indeed working hard to make sure that nuclear terrorism remains, forever, merely a hypothetical problem.”
