D3S PRD and ID radiation detector app

A detailed look at the gamma spectroscopy phone app used in the D3S PRD and ID

The D3S PRD and ID detector app – a bright, clear, and easy to use

The radiation phone app that comes with our D3S PRD and ID has been designed to put the most important information in the most prominent place.

D3S PRD and ID app have the same look and feel

We have kept the look and feel, menus and controls identical between the PRD app and the ID app to make it easier for users to switch between the two.

The D3S PRD app

This app offers the crucial information needed by the majority of first responders, event security, VIP protection, border control, and other none CBRNE trained personnel.

It has two modes either:

  1. Search only which will alert the user to the presence of a radioactive source and shows the gamma dose rate and neutron count while the time graph shows the elevated count, or
  2. Search and Identify mode which will alert the user to the presence of a radioactive source and shows the gamma dose rate and neutron count while the time graph shows the elevated count, identifies the isotope found and classifies the isotope (see below for details).

The icon in the lower left corner of the screen shows what mode the D3S PRD is currently in.

The D3S ID app

A simple licence activation which can be done over the air in the field (no need to return to base) turn the PRD app into the full ID (RIID) app. They both use the same D3S detector unit so the hardware remains the same. You now have a full RIID capable device in your hand.

The full ID app offers: continuous threat search, isotope detection and identification, isotope classification, alert history, alert record, confirmation mode (which performs an up to five-minute scan of any suspect material), and reach back reporting (including taking a background reading and event photo).

Clear gamma and neutron dose

The centre of the screen shows the gamma dose rate and neutron count, making sure the user cannot miss this vital information.

Large and clear isotope identification alert pop-ups

Once a source has been identified the alert showing the source pops-up in a box at the top of the screen. The box shows the isotope detected and its classification. The alert box shows you how many alerts you have and allows you to swipe through them if the detector has identified more than 1 isotope.

The phone also vibrates and announces the alert and isotope, this is easy to into silent mode with one click on the main menu (top left).

The alert box will prompt the user to move to confirmation mode (on D3S ID). Confirmation mode is one click away.

Time graph showing alerts and count rate when you need it

A time graph is available, showing the count rate trends of the last five minutes of the search mode scan. This can be hidden until you want to see it by using the yellow swipe bar at the bottom of the screen. Highlights and spikes in the graph clearly indicate a radioactive source detection. The icon indicates the classification of the identified source, which can be clicked to reveal additional details of the identification.

Isotope classification

All D3S devices in search and identification mode show the source classification, helping you understand what you might be facing:

  • Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM)
  • Medical
  • Industrial
  • Special Nuclear Material (SNM)

A list of past alerts also available

The clock icon to the left of SEARCH allows the user to see a list of past alert history, showing up to 100 most recent alerts, of which 50 can be from Confirmation Mode scan result.

Dark mode ready

The app screen can now be switched to a dark mode which some users prefer rather than a bright white screen. It also makes the screen more discreet when used at night as well as reducing phone battery consumption.

Battery and connectivity always available

The status of the D3S detector unit is more visible and easier to understand. The icons in the bottom right show detector battery status and that the two devices are connected.

Help when using confirmation and reachback mode

Confirmation mode is easy to use. It gives the user help to get the best scan available, with a bar showing if the detector should be moved closer to the source, as wells as instructions on the confirmation scan process.

Reachback has an on-screen checklist that walks the user through the process, prompting them for measurement of the suspect item, background measurement and site photo. The user can also type any other relevant information in the report and with one click select to share the report for adjudication.
