Seeing the invisible: radiological protection made easy

09/09/2024

An unseen threat

Heading towards an incident, firefighters are at risk of exposure to invisible threats such as radiation. Without any indication of the severity or even presence of radioisotopes, firefighters risk developing short and long-term health problems and spreading contamination beyond the affected site.

Firefighters frequently put themselves in danger to protect the public. But who is protecting them?

Always monitoring, they’re always safe

Equipped with Kromek’s reliable, small form factor D3M personal radiation detector (PRD), firefighters have one less thing to worry about. With constant monitoring and instant Gamma and Neutron alarms, the presence/absence of radioactive material can be confirmed with speed and confidence. Rapid action can then be taken to keep the firefighters at the scene as safe as possible. The ultra-low false alarm rate of the detector ensures interruptions only occur in the event of a real radiological threat.

Better detection, better decisions; the D3M is now available on the National Resilience Framework.

Grab it and go

A firefighter’s everyday gear is already heavy enough. Lightweight and wearable, the D3M is an unnoticeable addition, providing life-saving capability. Slotted into its custom, transparent pouch and attached to a firefighter’s uniform, essential dose data is easily accessible at any moment.

With single–button operation, the detector is simple to use. Dose rate and accumulated dose is displayed on screen, whilst RIID-quality spectral data is stored on the device for later adjudication by specialist CBRN teams.

Crucial data for crucial decisions

The D3M can be used as a standalone device or paired to a phone with the Kromek ID app, the latter delivering the additional capability of isotope identification, informing the most appropriate, context-specific next steps. This detection duo also enhances widespread situational awareness, due to the ability to network the D3M into any existing system, making key spectral and dose data rapidly available for remote decision-makers, facilitating the coordination of large-scale responses.

Ready for anything

Ruggedised with an IP65 rating, the D3M PRD is ready for any harsh environment firefighters are faced with. The device’s battery life of 24 hours ensures those on call can receive essential alarms and dose data through the duration of their shift. Its small size makes storage simple; the D3M can be rapidly and reliably equipped whenever needed.

Little training is required to use the D3M, with automatic calibration saving significant time and money.

Seeing the invisible with the D3M PRD

Firefighters can be confident they know exactly what they’re heading into with the rapid, reliable and straightforward radiation detection of the D3M PRD, available on the National Resilience Network and on show at stand H154 at the Emergency Services Show, NEC, Birmingham 18th – 19th September.

Who we are

With the ultimate goal to make the world a safer and healthier place, Kromek designs, develops, manufactures and markets cutting-edge radiation detectors for global customers in the fields of Advanced Imaging and CBRN Detection, its HQ in Sedgefield County Durham and offices in the UK and US.
