SPECT

Kromek’s CZT-based detectors at the forefront of SPECT technology

The future of SPECT

Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a mainstream medical imaging modality; a nuclear medicine-based technology key in producing high quality digital images for more confident diagnoses. The demand for advances in SPECT is significant: to make diagnostic procedures increasingly shorter and safer for patients while improving patient outcomes with enhanced image quality.

Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) based detector technology is widely recognised in the industry as the next step forward in SPECT. CZT based SPECT detection enables direct conversion data processing, opening doors to significant increases in energy and spatial resolution, lower patient doses and shorter scan times.

We’re advancing SPECT technology, now

Kromek leads in CZT-based detection solutions for medical applications including SPECT. Collaborating with key global technology partners and OEMs, we’re driving better patient outcomes by providing reliable and best-in-class detection platforms, ranging from detector material production to the integration of electronics.

D-Matrix Gamma Ray Imaging Detectors

The D-Matrix Detector Module Platform offers a modular and scalable gamma ray imaging detector design approach, enabling performance differentiation and configuration flexibility.

The D-Matrix platform is comprised of 2D scalable detector modules each consisting of 4 CZT detector tiles, either 20mm or 22mm square, with 2.0 or 2.46mm pixel pitch.

The detector modules are enabled by fully-featured ASICs offering a range of performance and optimization functionality options including charge-sharing and depth-of interaction corrections. For medical imaging applications, the D Matrix G1 through G6 modules offer scalable solution for gamma ray applications including whole-body and cardiac SPECT, hand-held surgical cameras, as well as thyroid, breast, veterinary, pre-clinical molecular imaging.

CZT-based Detector Devices

Kromek also offers an array of CZT detector device solutions (both standard and customer) without integration of the read out electronics.

Our in-house grown CZT ingots are sliced, diced, polished, and ultimately fabricated With thin, metalised electrodes deposited on the detector surface.

The benefits of CZT in SPECT

Better diagnostic images: Less scatter and a better lesion contrast to background ratio brought about by a high energy resolution.
Lower-injected doses and faster scan times: A lower tissue background enables a lower count density to be used to obtain high quality diagnostic images.
Earlier detection of disease: the 2mm square pixel resolution and non-overlapping neighbouring pixels. Small lesion conspicuity is boosted as a result.
Improved patient experience: Faster scans times reduce patient discomfort, and in turn result in less movement that can lead to image blurring.
Enhanced quantitation: The long-term stability and superior performance of CZT semiconductors introduces an advanced quantitative capability to SPECT.
Increased patient throughput: One digital CZT SPECT system may perform the same number of patient studies as two conventional analogue SPECT systems. This also considerably reduces the cost of ownership.
